Once a year, Paintress wakes up and paints something on her monolith. It’s a cursed number. Everyone turns to smoke at that age and disappears. Year after year, there are fewer numbers and more of us are erased. Tomorrow, she will awaken and paint “33.” Tomorrow, we will set off on our final mission—to destroy Paintress so that she never paints death again. We are Expedition 33.

With only a year left to live, Gustave, Maelle, and the other members of the expedition set out on a desperate quest to break Paintress’s cycle of death.
